Cliff is a Musician who plans to study Music Performance and Composition in the future. We have been acquainted a few years ago, and met up recently for a drink. Somehow, our conversation drifted to cigarettes, and naturally I had to ask about whether he thought there was a correlation between the kind of person he is, and the kind of cigarettes he smokes.
Cliff initially started with weed, but couldn’t afford it anymore and had to smoke something else. Cigarettes were a natural progression. It goes extremely well with alcohol and coffee, and acts as a taste enhancer. He currently smokes Camels and Marlboros (but mainly Camels) as most menthol and light cigarettes makes him gag . He doesn’t have a clue why this happens, but muses that it is probably due to what they put inside.
What made him smoke the most was ‘The picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde. Wilde wrote:
“You must have a cigarette. A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want?”
This clicked with Cliff and ever since, he has been using it sort of as self harm. It affects him, and makes him feel something in his life, a life that has mostly been rather bleak and monotonous. Smoking became something for him to get away from that.
To end off, I asked him if there was a correlation. Unfortunately, Cliff did not think so.
